Summary

Are you ready to take your MI skills to the next level? In this intermediate Motivational Interview (MI) course you will build upon your existing foundational knowledge of MI by deepening your skill set with the intentional use of the four MI tasks: Engage, Focus, Evoke and Plan. You will strengthen your relational and technical MI competencies, learn to identify and respond to change talk, and apply fidelity tools to support ethical, client/patient-centered practice. Emphasis is placed on cultivating change talk, reducing discord, readiness-based planning and integration of MI skills into real-world encounters.

Overview

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define the four tasks of MI and its key components.
  • Examine the spirit of MI in a way that reduces discord, honors autonomy, affirms strengths, conveys unconditional positive regard and expresses accurate empathy.
  • Demonstrate and strengthen person-centered OARS Plus communication skills within the four tasks of MI.
  • Identify and maintain a clear direction by collaboratively choosing a path that aligns client/patient goals with appropriate behaviors for change and growth.
  • Apply progressing skills within the evoking task by cultivating change talk and softening sustain talk.
  • Identify readiness to transition appropriately to the planning task, developing collaborative, client/patient-centered change plans that strengthen commitment and self-efficacy.
  • Apply the four tasks of Motivational Interviewing within real-world simulated encounters.

Learner Level

Intermediate

Prerequisite: To succeed in this course, learners should have recently completed a foundational MI course or equivalent and be able to explain the MI principles, spirit, processes and the core skills. It is highly recommended that learners come into this course with previous practice applying the MI core skills (e.g., responding to sustain talk, discord, and evoking change talk).

Melody Cole, MS, RDN, CD

(MS, RDN, CD, Washington State University) is the Motivational Interviewing (MI) Trainer at University of Wisconsin Health. As an experienced healthcare clinician, Melody has practiced MI with individuals and groups in clinical settings since 2008. For over a decade she has developed and facilitated MI trainings for a variety of learners including healthcare providers, business leaders, and organizations. She became a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of trainers in Berlin, Germany in 2015; and continues to be an active member of the International MI Leadership and Medical groups and Wisconsin MINT community.
