Summary

Listening to podcasts is a convenient way for behavioral health professionals to learn information relevant to their work. This podcast series explores topics that have an impact on the quality of our lives and the maintenance of our mental health — issues that are often not addressed in our typical treatment plans. The seven topics in Series 1 include Music and the Brain, Sleep, Memory, Cognitive Enhancement and Artificial Intelligence, Happiness, Humor and Aging.

Overview

Content for this fully online, asynchronous podcast series is housed in the Canvas (learner management system). You can listen to the audio presentations anywhere, anytime. Audio may be streamed or downloaded onto your digital device from Canvas. For mobile-friendly options, download the Canvas mobile app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. Learners will complete the podcast series and have access to the Canvas course site for 180 days.

Earn continuing education hours by logging in to Canvas and satisfactorily completing the following: 

  • Pre-audio self reflection for each topic
  • Listen to the audio podcasts and complete the open-note quizzes (80% passing grade with three attempts)
  • Particpate in the podast discussion boards (optional)
  • Submit your questions to Dr. Mays (optional)

At the end of this podcast series participants will be able to:

  • Describe contemporary scientific findings regarding the listed podcast topics.
  • Gain awareness in how these topics affect the quality of life and mental health.
  • Explain ongoing research and health interventions related to each topic.
  • Assess how interventions related to these topics may improve an individual's quality of life and mental health.

Meet your instructor

David Mays, MD, PhD

MD, PhD

(MD, PhD, Indiana University School of Medicine) is the past forensic clinical director at the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison. He also serves on the clinical faculty at UW-Madison and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Since 2005, Dr. Mays has been working extensively teaching mental health providers, medical personnel, law enforcement officers, judges and court commissioners, and community members on numbers topics in mental health, including psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, personality disorders, suicide and aggression risk management, mainstream and alternative treatments in psychiatry, and the biology of ethics. Dr. Mays has received numerous awards for his teaching and clinical work, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Alliance on Mental Illness in Dane County, the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Exceptional Performance Award from the Wisconsin Health and Family Services, the Outstanding Professional Award from the Wisconsin Association on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, and the Outstanding Mental Health Professional Award from the Wisconsin National Alliance on Mental Illness.
