This course explores how trauma can deeply affect a person's brain, worldview, and behaviors. You will learn how this understanding can support your work, whether you're a licensed professional or a non-clinical provider, in any service setting.

Through a blend of self-paced learning and live webinars, you'll engage with real-life stories and learn what the latest research tells us about trauma. We'll cover various types of trauma and how each person may respond to it in their own unique way. You'll learn core concepts and practical tools you can apply across different environments to support healing and resilience.

  • Identify types of trauma and the core principles of trauma-informed care.
  • Explain how traumatic experiences can impact brain development, behaviors, cognition and affect.
  • Develop skills in active listening, identifying triggers, and using trauma-informed methods that support learning, healing, and empowerment.
  • Compare trauma-informed approaches with non-trauma-informed approaches.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of trauma-informed interventions and provide constructive feedback in client scenarios.

Meet your instructor

Shawn Smith

is a nationally respected trainer with over 30 years in human services and over 15 years educating professionals. A MINT-Certified Motivational Interviewing Trainer, he founded Share Collaborative, a Milwaukee-based professional development organization. His work spans criminal justice, education, behavioral health, and workforce development, with a focus on trauma-informed care, team wellness, and reflective supervision. Shawn teaches Motivational Interviewing at UW–Milwaukee’s Helen Bader School of Social Work and developed the Healing-Focused Care framework to support trauma healing and systems change. Known for his engaging, down-to-earth style, he helps learners connect the “why” to the “how” for lasting impact.
