Summary

Participants in this seminar will be introduced to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), where it fits into the history of psychotherapy in the United States and how it incorporates aspects of Cognitive Behavior Therapy and mindfulness practices into its approach to treatment of mental health issues. The etiology of Borderline Personality Disorder, from a DBT perspective, will also be introduced and key concepts in DBT will be defined. Finally, we will review each of the four skills modules taught in DBT and discuss ways DBT skills can be used to address problems patients may have and improve their wellbeing.

Meet your instructor

Erri C. Hewitt

is a licensed clinical psychologist who helps her patients optimize their mental health and wellbeing by offering them scientifically-supported approaches to mental health care that are tailored to their individual needs. Erri specializes in working with women in the pre- and postpartum periods, children and families coping with emotion and behavioral problems, and people who are adjusting to chronic illness and injuries. Erri has experience with cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy and dialectical behavior therapy. In addition to directly working with patients, Erri lectures on mental health care and teaches residents and interns at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
