Summary

Mentoring is a critical professional development relationship that can be immensely gratifying for the mentor and beneficial for the mentee. With planning, care and attention, it can accelerate professional development for both mentor and mentee. In this course, we'll explore the specifics of mentoring, including: what makes mentoring distinct from managing and coaching, how to recognize when mentoring is called for and how to manage the mentoring relationship from beginning to end. We'll spend time talking about alternatives to traditional 1:1 mentoring relationships and how to share experiences and provide feedback and advice in a way that maximizes their helpfulness for the mentee.

Overview

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
  • Explain the difference between mentoring, managing, and coaching and recognize when to utilize each.
  • Describe the unique characteristics and best practices of a successful mentor/mentee relationship.
  • Identify alternative approaches to the traditional 1:1 mentoring relationship and when each approach is appropriate.
  • Communicate the benefits of being a mentor and working with a mentor.
  • Manage the mentoring relationship and recognize when it's run its course.
  • Provide feedback and share experiences for maximum impact.
